1984 Olympic pole vault champion Pierre Quinon committed suicide at his home in Hyeres, southern France, on Wednesday, the French Athletics Federation said Thursday.
A spokesman for the FFA said the federation was "in shock" following the new of the 49-year-old athlete's death.
Quinon was the first person to win gold for France in pole vault at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
In 1983 he broke the world record by clearing 5.82 metres at a meet in Cologne, Germany, but another Frenchman, Thierry Vigneron, broke that record by one centimetre four days later.
Quinon retired from sport in 1992 to the French Riviera and went into business. He also took up abstract painting, and regularly exhibited his works locally.
